Sandusky River

The Sandusky River is located in northern Ohio. The river's watershed begins in Richland County. The Sandusky is approximately 150 miles long and eventually flows into Lake Erie at Sandusky Bay. The river passes through several communities. Among the most notable ones are Tiffin, Fremont, and Upper Sandusky.

American Indians and Ohio’s early white settlers used the Sandusky River for transportation. Water travel was much quicker and cheaper than land travel during this era. Ohio settlers used the Sandusky and the state’s other rivers to transport their crops to market. Both Indians and white people settled along the river due to the fertile farmland in the Sandusky’s floodplain. Ohioans in the twenty-first century primarily use the river for recreation. In 1970, the Ohio government designated the portion of the Sandusky River between Fremont and Upper Sandusky as a scenic river.
