Katherine Hill created the T. Marzetti Company's Original Slaw Dressing and remained a vital employee of the firm for nearly seventy years.
Hill was born in 1916. In 1933, during the height of the Great Depression, she accepted a temporary position as dishwasher at a Columbus, Ohio restaurant owned by Teresa Marzetti. Two weeks later, she accepted another temporary position, cutting fruits and vegetables, at the same establishment. After this position ended two weeks later, the restaurant hired Hill permanently as its baker. Although she had no experience as a baker, Marzetti was impressed with Hill's work ethic.
Over time, Hill became responsible for creating new recipes for the restaurant. Hill invented Marzetti's slaw dressing, as well as several other salad dressings and dishes. She once claimed that, "I taste, see, smell, feel and pour," to create her various concoctions. She remained with the T. Marzetti Company even after the Lancaster Colony Corporation purchased the firm in 1970. In 2002, Hill retired, after having worked for the same company for sixty-nine years.
