Description

"Canal Days," a full-color illustration of a daily canal scene in Coshocton, Ohio, ca. 1827. The illustration comes from "Great Moments in Ohio Heritage." Men can be seen loading and unloading the canal boat, as well as driving mules along what was known as a towpath. Mules or horses were often used to pull the canal boats along the water before the development of means like the diesel engine, and the animals were able to haul far more weight in cargo by boat than they would on land.
