This 8.5" by 11" (21.6 by 27.9 cm) group photograph depicts Calvin Coolidge (left) shaking hands with former Ohio secretary of state Carmi Thompson. Thompson served as the treasurer of the United States (1912-1913) and assistant secretary of the interior under President William Howard Taft. On May 22, 1922 Westerville hosted Vice President Calvin Coolidge. He was originally scheduled to be in Columbus only long enough to give a speech at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. However, due to the efforts of local postmistress Mary E. Lee and her political and personal ties to President Warren G. Harding, Vice President Coolidge also agreed to re-dedicate the Soldiers' Monument at Otterbein College.
