Drake,_Daniel.jpg(252 × 310 pixels, file size: 16 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

This engraving of Daniel Drake, which measures approximately 5 by 7 inches (11 x 19 cm), is taken from Memoirs of the Life and Services of Daniel Drake, M. D., written by Edward Mansfield and published in 1855. Drake (1785-1852) was born in New Jersey and later migrated with his family to Kentucky. He studied medicine with a Cincinnati physician and attended lectures in Philadelphia. Drake dreamed of starting a medical college in the "west" and returned to Philadelphia for his doctor of medicine degree, which would allow him to serve as a professor. He founded the Cincinnati Medical College and published on a variety of medical related topics. In addition to his medical pursuits, Drake was an active booster for the city of Cincinnati, a director of the Cincinnati branch of the Bank of the United States, and an avid naturalist whose collections served as the basis of the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History.
