Description

Cleveland industrialists Samuel Andrews (1836-1904) and John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937) began refining crude oil into kerosene in 1863. The firm became the Standard Oil Company in 1870, and Andrews served as superintendent until 1874, when he sold his shares to Rockefeller for $1 million. The company grew to control ninety percent of the nation's refining capacity in the 1880s. After lengthy anti-trust litigation, Standard Oil of Ohio was created in 1911. Known as Sohio, the company merged with BP America in 1987.
