Alexander Hill was once sheriff of Washington County, Ohio. He also was an important furniture maker during the early nineteenth century.
Little is known of Hill's early life. He migrated to the United States of America, and during the early 1800s, he settled in Marietta, Ohio. Hill intended to move to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he hoped to find himself a career related to the sea. He, however, settled in Marietta, not having the funds necessary to continue to New Orleans.
Hill quickly emerged as a prominent and respected resident of Marietta. He served as sheriff of Washington County, Ohio from 1814 to 1816. He also supported himself by making furniture, cabinets, and coffins for local residents.
