James W. Fleming

James W. Fleming was Ohio's sixth Secretary of Agriculture. The Secretary of Agriculture served as the head of the Ohio State Board of Agriculture.

Fleming was born in 1850 in Columbus, Ohio. At fourteen years of age, he became a messenger for the Ohio Board of Agriculture. He would remain an employee of this institution until his death. Fleming held numerous positions in the Ohio Board of Agriculture, including clerk, recording secretary, and assistant secretary. In 1878, with the death of Secretary John Hancock Klippart, Fleming became the head of the board, a position that he held in 1878, 1879, and 1880. He resigned as secretary in 1880, but Fleming continued to serve as the Assistant Secretary of the Ohio Board of Agriculture until his death in 1905.
