Cincinnati, Ohio. He served as a superior court judge in Ohio from 1865 to 1872. Between 1876 and 1885 Taft held several federal appointments, including Secretary of War, Attorney General, Minister to Austria-Hungary and Minister to Russia. His son, William Howard Taft, served as both President of the United States and Chief Justice of the United States Surpreme Court.
