The Cenozoic (recent life) Era began about 65 million years ago and continues to the present. It is divided into the Paleogene Period (65 to 23 million years ago) and the Neogene Period (23 million years ago to the present). The era began after extinction of the dinosaurs and other reptiles and saw the proliferation and diversification of mammals.
