The first ejection from an airplane while in flight occurred at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio.
On August 17, 1946, Sergeant Larry Lambert ejected from an airplane while in flight over Wright Field. Lambert was testing a new device to assist pilots in escaping from high-speed aircraft. The test was successful, making Lambert the first man to eject from an aircraft while in flight and to do so successfully.
Lambert illustrates the important role that Ohioans have played in aviation. With such important names as the Wright Brothers, John Glenn, Neil Armstrong, and numerous others, Ohioans have been at the forefront of aviation history.
