First White Wedding in Cleveland

The first wedding between a white man and a white woman in Cleveland took place on July 4, 1797.


The groom was William Clement, while the bride was Chloe Inches. The ceremony took place in the home of Lorenzo Carter. Carter was the first permanent white resident of Cleveland, Ohio, having arrived in the community on May 2, 1797. Inches was employed as Carter's housekeeper.


Clement, Inches, and Carter were typical of most early settlers of Cleveland and the surrounding countryside. These people sought to improve their lives on the American frontier. Some, like Inches and Clement, found happiness, while many struggled to survive in the wilderness.
