Mamie Eloise Fox was an African-American poetess during the late nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries.
Fox was born on April 10, 1871, in Chillicothe, Ohio. Both of her parents were freed slaves from Virginia. Fox spent her youth in Chillicothe, graduating from Chillicothe High School in June 1891. As a child, she showed an interest in writing, especially poetry. Upon graduating high school, Fox continued to write, having many of her poems published in the Ringwood Journal. She also was a regular contributor to the Christian Recorder.
Besides writing, Fox was a major supporter of the temperance movement. She also supplemented her income from writing by serving as the secretary to the president of Wilberforce University and by teaching in African-American schools in North Carolina.
