In 1993, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Wildlife implemented "Free Fishing Days." On specific days, this program allows Ohio residents to fish in any of Ohio's bodies of water without having to pay for a fishing license. The Division of Wildlife hoped that this program would encourage residents to purchase a fishing license, increasing the budget of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The Division of Wildlife utilizes proceeds from fishing licenses to protect Ohio's waterways.
