The German Reformed Church founded Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, in 1850. By 1850 there were a significant number of German immigrants in Ohio. The German Reformed Church had seventy-four churches in the state when members decided to establish the college.

Over the years, Heidelberg College has gained a reputation for its excellent liberal arts education, ranked numerous times in U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best Colleges" survey.
