The Holocene Epoch, sometimes referred to as the Recent, began 10,000 years ago and continues to the present. The Holocene began with the final melting of the continental glaciers that dominated the northern hemisphere for the previous two million years, a time period called the Pleistocene Epoch. Both the Pleistocene and Holocene are subdivisions of the Neogene Period of the Cenozoic Era.
