Melissa Garrett was born in Adams County, Ohio in 1834. She eventually married W.H. Timmons, and upon his death, she wed William Terrell.

Melissa Terrell was a member of the Southern Ohio Christian Conference. She was ordained as a minister of the Christian Church at the Ebenezer Church in Clark County, Ohio on March 7, 1867. Some sources list the year as 1866. She was the first woman ordained by the Christian Church. Over the course of her ministerial career, Terrell served as a minister at churches in Ohio, Iowa, and Missouri.
