Metamorphic Rock

From Ohio History Central
Revision as of 17:11, 27 April 2013 by Unknown user (talk)

Metamorphic rocks are formed by heat and pressure applied to igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks, generally during mountain-building episodes when rocks are deeply buried and subjected to extreme pressures. Depending upon the degree of heat and pressure, metamorphic rocks can be low grade or high grade. For example, limestone subjected to metamorphic forces recrystallizes to marble.
