In 1948, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, and New York established the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO). This organization's purpose is to develop programs to improve the environmental conditions of the Ohio River and its watershed.
