Portsmouth Spartans

The Portsmouth Spartans was a professional football team that played in Portsmouth, Ohio. The team played in the National Football League. Established on July 12, 1930, the Spartans remained in Portsmouth for the 1930 through 1933 seasons. In the team's first season, the Spartans finished eighth in the league. The next season, the team finished second and, in 1932, third. In 1932, the Spartans appeared in the league championship game, the first in NFL history, losing to the Chicago Bears 9-0.

Following the 1933 season, the Portsmouth Spartans moved to Detroit and became the Detroit Lions.
