Dawn Powell was a notable Twentieth Century American novelist and playwright.
Powell was born in 1896 in Mount Gilead, Ohio. She graduated from Lake Erie College and moved to New York City in the early 1920s. Her early writings centered on Ohio, but her later work was set in New York City as well. Powell wrote fifteen books, ten plays, and several dozen short stories. She became famous for her satiric style. Among her writings are The Golden Spur, The Bride's House, and My Home is Far Away. In 1964, she received the Peabody Award for her literary works.
