St. Clairsville is the county seat of Belmont County, Ohio.
The town was established in 1801. Residents named St. Clairsville after Governor Arthur St. Clair of the Northwest Territory.
St. Clairsville grew very slowly during the nineteenth century. In 1840, only 829 people lived in the community, although the town did boast six churches, twelve stores, and at least two newspapers. Forty years later, 1,128 people resided in St. Clairsville.
In 2000, St. Clairsville contained just over five thousand residents. It was the second largest community in Belmont County. Between 1995 and 2000 the town's population declined by two percent.
Benjamin Lundy began his career as an abolitionist in St. Clairsville.
