{ Marjorie Mellace Whiteman was born in Liberty Township, Ohio, in 1898. She would emerge as one of the leading experts on international law during the 1950s and the 1960s.

Whiteman attended and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. She received a law degree from Yale University and also attended National University to further her education. She dedicated her life to the study of international law and, from 1945 to 1951, advised former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt during her tenure as the United States Representative to the United Nations General Assembly. Whiteman remained in the public arena for approximately forty years and served as an advisor to ten different Secretaries of State during her career.

Whiteman's greatest contribution to international law was the completion of a Digest of International Law in 1969. This fifteen-volume work continues to serve as a leading resource on international law for government officials and scholars.
