C.B. Winder was the first man to become a pilot for any National Guard unit in the United States of America.
Winder was a member of the Ohio National Guard. On June 5, 1912, he graduated from the Army Aviation School in Augusta, Georgia. Winder was the first National Guard soldier to successfully complete the course. He was a lieutenant colonel at the time of graduation. Besides flying, Winder also excelled at marksmanship, winning the Leech Cup in 1903. He also designed a special tube sight for use on a Springfield rifle.
Winder illustrates the important role that Ohioans have played in aviation. With such important names as the Wright Brothers, John Glenn, Neil Armstrong, and numerous others, Ohioans have been at the forefront of aviation history.
